The Fund is making a real difference in many people's lives

Mobilising resources to address TB, malaria and HIV and AIDS remains a priority

The first annual review meeting of the Three Diseases Fund (3DF) took place on 1-2 April 2008 in Yangon, Myanmar. It was the first occasion to bring representatives of all stakeholders together, including donors, the Ministry of Health and implementing partners drawn from 23 non-governmental organisations and UN agencies. The meeting underlined the importance of the Fund’s work in the country.

“Important strides have taken place. We heard impressive first hand accounts of how the Fund is making a real difference to many people’s lives”, Mark Canning, Fund Board Chair, said in his concluding remarks.

Mobilising resources remains a priority, the review noted.

The Fund Board has carried away suggestions and drawn up recommendations for extending outreach and improving health delivery in the future.

The Three Diseases Fund is a unique funding mechanism established in 2006 by six international donors to address the three diseases in close cooperation with all key actors.

In 2007 grants amounting total US$21 million were provided by the 3DF to 23 implementing partners drawn from UN agencies and international non-governmental organisations to work with local NGOs, community-based organisations and professional associations to deliver and scale up provision of health services to address the three diseases.

Supported by Australia, the European Commission (EC), the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom (UK), the Three Diseases Fund has pledged US$100 million over 5 years.
